Woodoo - Taikakulkunen (1971 Ufo CD 2011 Rocket Records)
An obscure (Santana?) outfit from early 70's Tampere sound-area in Finland. When i first heard this band's new cd in a music shop in Tampere, i tried to recall where i had heard the vocalist before. First i guessed the band was Haikara but was not. Ok, i had to buy this brand new CD album. The music really is obscure and that means it is very "hämyä" in Tampere language. The music on the album is also prog-jazz-pop-folk-psych. Some pieces are like straight from Finnish Kalevala type folksinging foot: "Mie-lee-ni mii-nun- teee-keee-vi, ai-vooo-ni aa-jat-tee-leeevi, lääh-te-ääni lau-laa-maahan, saa-aani-saane-lee-maa-han... and so on. With quite monotonous and streched way of singin the few notes, hand in hand, side by side, waving. All tracks but one are sung in Finnish so there is something extra obsure for sale for the diggers of very odd music. The name of the band, Woodoo... well what can i say... Woodoo in Finlands deep forests may sound a bit like Jamaican voodoo, but isn't the same. Finnish woodoo means there is much wood to do Kanteles and and boats and if you have no wood to do, you still do have your words as well as Vipunen and Väinämöinen had. "Taikakulkunen" means a magic jingle bell. In think Taikakulkunen may be the best piece on this longplay. It starst with Kalevalian foot and turns to nice jazzjam. I was a bit reserved when starting to listen to this but the more i drink White Horse the better this sounds. Heh. Woodoo is sure worth investigatin. And by the way "Suudelma" means a kiss and that piece is an indication of different kind of ways of kissing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_NlqTFbZO4&feature=related
