Tee And Cara - As They Are (1969 United Artists)

Tee Sapoff and Cara Beckenstein, 18 and 16 years old John Adams high school students from NY in 1969 have created an atmospheric album. Before they went duo there was a third wheel too, but after few sessions Tee and Cara found this form better. Have to admit their voices fit well together. These young talented musicians have of course written all but two of the songs by themselves. Beatles's Hard days night they do is nice, slow and soulful version too. I think i can hear they were more than a s-s-w duo. The picture on the cover is moodfull. Time is hardish midway psychedelic rock. It is not perfect, but everything is in balance somehow odd way that makes me feel good. Guitars, vocals, moog/hammond... the whole sound is what i like to listen.

Justen O'Brien & Jake - Time Will Tell (1978 re 2010)

I got this for birthday present. There is a saying that one shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. How would that work when concerning music...? Never review music that you have handseled? "Time Will Tell" is quite hard case in many meanings. People who have reviewed it on the web seem without exception to say it is psychedelic. I can hardly localize any psych elements on it. Mostly it is light, easily floating easy listening synth-pop. This kind of rare private press albums tend to grow some extra halo around, if there is a good story to tell with it. And this one has. It is how Justen disappeared after getting the record ready in 1978. He was told to be abducted by Ufo and taken away. The drummer Jake's knowledge was that Justen passed away. Jake didn't even like Justen's record, but skeet shot half of all the 1000 records. Justen was finally found around 1995 and second time in 2008 in a motel in Alaska by Douglas Mcgowan. There entire amusing story is written on the inside cover. After all i have to confess that i listen to this album willingly, but at the same time i understand that the possible cult status around it is rigged to create more interest around a quite mediocre synth-(jazz)lounge-pop record. Tea & Symphony - An Asylum To The Musically Insane (1969 Harvest re)

Poo..oop! Are they trying to be mysterious, clever and funny at the same time? Nonsense at its best, when genuine, can be great, but this is just pretentious counterfreiting wannabee nonsense. If this band were an acting group, i'm sure they would have confidently staged the whole production of Shakespeare's in one hour, including two tea breaks.

...36hrs later. Don't know what happened. I have listened this about six times now. After the first time i felt what i wrote above, and more. Then i had to turn to the album again and again. It forced me. I didn't know i was musically insane... How can one's mind turn around 180 degrees in 36 hours? I was sure they were just self-indulgently mocking me and now i feel like being home in this music.

...48hrs later. "Terror in My Soul" is my fave. The whole back side is better than the front side. The front side sounds like warming up for the back side. I now feel with this album like hearing Frank Zappa's music first time when i was fifteen. I liked FZ immediately. I'm fifty-three now and and cynically reserved of getting same feelings never again. So, I didn't like this from the first moment. I hated this. I was angry, because the immediate emotion how his came across was jeering, self-absorbing, scornful, empty... and now I have totally settled down at this asylum.

Titus Groan - S/T (1970 Janus)

My latest flea catch just for 3 euros. Allmusic review by Jon "Mojo" Mills is unintelligible. He is wrong! Shame on him! I mean this comment by him: "The fact that Titus Groan tried so hard to be prog is their downfall. As a standard pop record, this could have been great, but the constant twiddling becomes off-putting so quickly, which is a shame. In hindsight, this is an album that is well worth skimming through for the finer moments -- but watch out for the progressive nuances."

Constant twiddling! Ha! I think that as a standard pop record, without "twiddling" this would be like any other, but specifically its "progressive nuances" (twiddling) make it very interesting, authentic, well-balanced and enjoyable. Titus seems to awake reminiscences to amazingly many directions. At least the following bands are mentioned in reviews when concerning Titus Groan: Gryphon, Fruup, Egg, Nucleus, Chicago, Soft Machine, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Czar, Cream, King Crimson, Colosseum and Pretty Things (SF Sorrow). What does this tell us? I haven't the foggiest idea. No, it can't mean that Titus (1970) tried so hard to be prog that had influences from all those bands mentioned. The only evidence of copycatting is a well recognized descending base guitar riff from Chicago's "25 Or 6 To 4" on their "Hall of Bright Carvings" (about at 1.50). (Maybe one "mission impossible" tune too :-)) After all Titus Groan transmits authentic joy of playing without any undesirable over producing. This proto-progish sound just hits me.

Romeon veljeksistä Tony on säveltänyt mm. Lou Christielle. Tämä heidän ja Cassandra Morganin yhteinen projektinsa on erittäin mielenkiintoinen kokoelma maalaismaisemaan ympättyä psychpoptunnelmaa. Tony ja Morgan työsketelivät myöhemmin Lou Christien kanssa, jolle Tony sävelsi. Cassandra loi uraa New Yorkin oopperassa. Levy on moniulotteinen paitsi sävellystensä, niin myös musiikillisen muotonsa puolesta. Orkestroitu tausta, sopivassa mitassa hyödynnetyt ääniefektit ja tavallisesta poikkeavien soittimien, kuten huilun ja harpun käyttö luovat kansikuvan ja musiikillisen sisällön välille herkullista ristiriitaa ja jännitettä. Cassandra siis laulaa, mutta pojat antavat paikoin doo-wop -tukea ja kolmikon laulu toimii nautittavalla tavalla. Musiikki syntyy helpon tuntuisesti ja juuri se tekee kuuntelukokemuksesta virkistävän, vaikka toisaalta levyä ei ole viimisen päälle tuunattu, ja ehkä juuri siksi. Kansikotelon kuvat ovat upeat. Levy alkaa 35 sekunnin mittaisella "The beginning" renkutuksella ääniefekteineen ja päättyy kesken katkeavaan 22 sekunnin mittaiseen "the End" :iin. Ympyrä sulkeutuu hauskasti ja kuuntelijan mielihyvin kääntämään levyn ja alkamaan alusta....

I have introduced this record album on my two blogs before and was lucky to get a message from Bob (Bucky) Wiener, the Leading Rhythm Acoustic guitarist, song writer and the other of the two friends.

"Hi, This is Bucky. Thank you for listining. We did this a long time ago but the memories linger. That trip out to Death Valley to take the pictures was gruling but fun anyway. Producer Tom Wilson came with us. Great classic recording studios we worked in."

Mail from Bucky: "We recorded the basic tracks at Record Plant,L.A. and used TTG studios and Mowest studios (Motown) I was able to sit in a few sessions when Michael Jackson (young at the time recorded as well as Diana Ross and Bobby Darin. Met Gladys Knight and Berry Gordy, Suzanne DuPass. Tom Wilson did produce all the artists you mentioned also Simon and Garfunkel. I like the way it came out but I really wished I could be there for the final mixes. Tom wanted to do that. Chip and I when we played live were just 2 acoustic guitars and we both sang. Chip and I played through the years now and then and we wrote alot of country tunes. I went by the name Buck Gregory. Cliffie Stone signed a bunch of our songs but not too much came of that. Thank you for mentioning "I'll be free". Chip and I met through a church near Sunset Blvd. and started singing during the Jesus movement. Then we wrote secular songs and most of those were chosen for the LP so I'm glad "I'll be Free" made it (also Must Be The Wrath"). Young hippie Christians making the rounds on Sunset Blvd to all the music and publishing cos. Third Story Music (Herbie and Martin Cohen) signed us and shopped us to all the major labels. I guess Motown was their best deal. It really was an experience of a lifetime. We did play "The Golden Bear" nightclub opening for Linda Ronstadt back in the day."

Tomita - Snowflakes Are Dancing (1974 RCA)

Stravinsky ja Debussy on niitä klassisen musiikin säveltäjiä, joiden jutuista voin takuuvarmasti aina pitää. Japanilainen Isao Tomita tulkitsee tässä Debussyn kappaleita elektoronisilla laitteilla ja hän tekee sen kyllä hienosti. Soundi ja tulkinnat ovat alkuperäistä musiikkia upeasti kunnioittavaa. Olen aiemmin esitellyt mm. sellaisen 60-luvun Moog-miehen kuin Dick Hyman, mutta Tomitan tapauksessa ollaan jo seuraavalla tasolla. Varhaisesta Moog ja muusta elektroniikkamusasta on Tomitan toimesta edetty aimo harppaus ja seuraavaksi tuleekin sitten Jarre, joka vie asiaa vielä hieman eteenpäin, joskin hieman eri suuntaan. Olen kunnioituksesta mykkänä tätä kuunnellessani, ainoastaan sormet enää toimivat, niinkuin näkyy. Hieno albumi! Näyttääpä Tomita tehneen versionsa myös Stravinkyn Tulilinnusta.

The Three Ring Circus - Groovin On The Sunshine (1968 RCA)

Ensimmäisellä puolella lauletaan mietoa orkestroitua poppia. Toinen (instrumentaali) puoli alkaa lähes psykedeelisillä soundeilla kappaleessa "Fantastic Voyage" ja ehdin jo innostua, mutta valitettavasti se jää lähes siihen. Albumista on vastuussa Robert Allen jota luonnehditaan etukäteen Billboardin kesäkuun 22 numerossa sanoin "Allen's first effort in RCA tie-up will be musical concept". Phil Trainer & 60% Trees - Trainer (1973 Basf)

Amerikkalaisen Phil Trainerin albumi on folkrokkia, jossa tuo jälkimmäinen eli rock nousee hallitsevaksi soundiksi. Tuota rocksoundia tuottavat varsin hyvin molemmat kitarat. Albumin kappaleet ovat kaikki miehen omia sävellyksiä ja hyviä ovatkin, vaikka niistä yksikään ei nouse yli toisen. Useimmat taitavat kokonaisia albumeja arvioidessaan pitää negatiivisena asiana sitä ettei siltä löydy yhtään hittiainesta olevaa pieseä. Minua se ei haittaa. Päinvastoin, se riittää ja on jopa eduksi että kokonaisuus on hyvää tasoa. Hittisinglet ovat asia erikseen. Levyllä soittaa kolme viidesosaa Englantilaisen Trees folkpsych bändin jäsenistä. Trees on mennyt minulta toistaiseksi ohi, mutta aion jatkossa hankkia sen tuotantoa. Trees yhtyeestä vaikuttavat albumilla laulaja Celia Humbries, sähkökitaristi Barry Carke ja pianisti Bias Boshell. Niin, Phill Trainer on siis Amerikkalainen, joka vietti aikaa myös Briteissä ja sai sillä matkallaan aikaan tämän tyylikkään albumin. Yksi kappalaista on omistettu Jim Morrison -nimiselle Trainerin kaverille, muistumaksi siitä että oli vähällä liittyä tämän The Doorsiin. Olisko kannattanu? Tämä Trainerin ja Treesien levy on hyvin lähellä olla huomiotta ohitettu merkkipaalu. Muista albumilla soittavista: Dick parry soittaa saxofonia Pink Floydin kappaleissa Money, Us and Them ja Shine on You Grazy Diamond. Viulisti Chuck Fleming on soittanut mm. Skottilaisessa JSD bändissä ja löytyy monen muunkin Brittiartistin taustalta. Rumpali alan Eden kertoo myös kotisivuillaan omasta urastaan.

Muistanpa heti alkuun mainita kansikuvan olevan hieman erilainen Roger Dean -kansi. Albumin musiikki on kieltämättä hieman vaikeaa. Ensimmäisen puolen kuuntelu menee orientoituessa musiikilliseen ilmapiiriin, mutta toisen puolen avaa levyn ehkä paras ja samalla helpoin kappale "Fleance". Se on myös ainut biisi jossa lauletaan. Laulajaa on helppo ensin luulla naiseksi, mutta kyseessä on 15-vuotias Keith Chegwin, siis miespuolinen, jolla on vielä heliumit päällä. Levy on soundtrack elokuvaan Macbeth (Shakespeare) ja musiikkia voi kuvailla sanoilla folk, kamari, raga, avant-garde, jousimusa... jossa kuuluu mm. oboe, huilu (pikkolo) sello, viulu ja VCS3 -syntetisaattori.

The Trout - The Trout (1968 MGM)

Trout on yksi ilahduttavimpia aikanaan hämärän rajamaille jääneitä amerikkalaisia albumeja. Sen löytyminen ja kuunteleminen saa hyvälle tuulelle. Albumin musiikkia on oikeastaan vaikea kuvailla. Se on sekalainen kokoelma landepoppia, josta löytyy psykedeelistä "we three in the attic" maalaistunnelmaa. Cassandra Morgan laulaa upeasti. Veljekset Romeo luultavasti toteavat pian kuvan ottamisen jälkeen, että "This attic ain't big enough for the both of us". Kutkuttavan jännittävän mielenkiintoinen albumi. Taustalla soittaa isompi porukka ja soitinvalikoima on laaja.

Mike Pinera! So? Vuosi on 1975 ja jälki myös sen näköistä, eli peli on alettu menettää jo lopullisesti, mutta viimeisiä itsekunnioituksen rippeitä koetetaan vielä kerätä ja maalailla uudestaan. Huono albumi, mutta olkoon.

Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die (1970 Island)

Huh, tähän Amerikkalaisen invaasion väliin yksi erittäin loistava Englantilainen yhtye ja albumi. onpahan kyllä ihmeen hienoa musiikkia. Pehmeä soundi suoraan alkuperäiseltä vinyyliltä. Tämä ei ole mikään pienelle kiiltävälle pyöreälle tuntemattomalle objektille, jota kutsutaan nimellä CD uudelleen miksattu steriiliys. Psych jazz prog fusiota parhaimmillaan, mutta ei kuitenkaan ihan ekstaasiin kohottavaa. Mikähän olisi? Ps. Kun John Vehnäsen piti kuitenkin kuolla, niin ei hän kuollut ainakaan liikenteen uhrina. PPs. Taisin muuten lukea kerran raamatun läpi ja siellä loppupuolella, uudessa testamentissa puhuttiin kyllä jostain vehnänjyvän kuolemattomuudesta. Vertauskuvana elämä jatkuu aina seuraavan sukupolven muodossa.
