Jon & Robin - Elastic Event (1967 Abnak)

I couldn't help myself picking this up because of the cover. The content is decent bubblegum pop.

he male-female duo Jon & Robin are thought of as a one-hit wonder for their playful 1967 Top 20 hit “Do It Again a Little Bit Slower.” Actually, however, they recorded quite a bit in the mid-to-late ’60s, with an engaging if somewhat lightweight style craftily mixing AM radio mid-’60s pop/rock with a little psychedelia and Southern soul.
“Do It Again a Little Bit Slower” was certainly the best of their discs, with its likable male-female vocal tradeoffs, a “Cool Jerk”-like soul piano riff at strategic points, and an effective fadeout that languorously stretched out the suggestive title phrase.
But their two LPs and a bunch of 1965-1969 singles included some enjoyable material as well, devised with help from some fine songwriters and some of the best production and backup musician talent in their Dallas base.
The male half of the duo, Jon Abdnor, had recorded some solo singles for his millionaire father’s Abnak label before hooking up with teenage singer Javonne Braga, who was billed as “Robin” on the records the pair made together. Their one national hit, “Do It Again a Little Bit Slower” (see previous post) came from the pen of Wayne Carson Thompson, most famous for writing the Boxtops’ “The Letter.”
The duo also recorded several other Thompson compositions, including the fairly gritty soul-popper “Dr. Jon (The Medicine Man),” which was a big hit in Texas, although it didn’t break nationally. Jon & Robin themselves wrote little original material, although they did benefit from production by ex-rockabilly star Dale Hawkins and Mike Rabon of the Five Americans, a fellow Abnak act.
Indeed, several of the Five Americans played on some Jon & Robin sessions, and another Abnak artist, soul singer Bobby Patterson, also helped out with some of their recordings. By the end of the 1960s, however, Jon & Robin had split, though Jon Abdnor did put out a 1969 solo LP, Intro to Change, billed to John Howard Abdnor & the Involvement. (Richie Unterberger)

Quote from "Manny" at Redtelephone66.com
About Jon (John Abnor), I knew this guy when I was in prison in Huntsville, Texas in the 80s. He was in there for shooting and killing his nurse girlfriend. He has no possibility of parole. He was one crazy/angry guy, no kidding. This was the same time period that David Crosby was there too for a gun charge. All of us at the same location, the Wynne Unit.

Nucleus - S/T (1969 Mainstream this re)

Organ and fuzzy guitar driven psych prog with some jazz dimensions. I'm not sure yet if i like it or not...   Nucleus is not too easy album and main vocalist's voice and the way of his singing is not easy to digest too. Next day: Now i know, this album is one of those which don't open immediately. Today when i'm listening it again i wonder what i heard yesterday. This is an excellent album. A week later: I have listened this many times during this week and the more i hear it the more convinced i am about its geniusness. I'm so happy i picked this up at a record fair last week.

Yellow - Keltakuume/Yellow Fever (1975 Finnlevy))

Original vinyl LP is quite rare and costs around 100 euros when available. The music on the album is semiheavy "prog" or should i say frog. It is mostly composed by guitarist Melvin McRae (American). Yellow was from the city of Turku, Finland and made another album too by a bit different manning and name Melvin McRae Band. The original album is quite rare too. I'm sorry to say i don't get the idea of this music, i have tried but no... There is some good guitar playing by M. McR but not much more. Yellow was a bit cult band for me for forty years because my neighbour and my best friend's big brother ReijoT played bass in the band on some gigs (not on this album) at that time when i was a bit above ten. I had never heard it through only some pieces and when it came out on CD in 2010 it was far from what i remembered and thought it would be.

Sixto Rodriguez - Coming From Reality (1971) & Cold Fact (1970)

This is one of the very first albums i have posted on my blog when i started in December 2009. I found this mint condition copy in June 2009 ago at a charity shop (here in Finland) among one euro costing gospel and classical music albums. Had never heard of him but at home when i listened to the record, i thought wow, who is this guy with that hypnotic voice, why haven't i heard anything from him before. July the first 2010 i pronounced on this blog "I Think Of You" the best love song ever. That time i listened to the album over and over again. Then in 2010 i purchased both his albums on CD. Then i put them aside for a bit over two years till i recently to my surprise got to know Malik Bandjelloul from Sweden (his grandfather was born in Finland by the way :-)) had made a long documentary about him and it even won the Oscar. Yesterday i went to see the film and was stunned! No doubt it is the best music document i have seen. Nobody of us six in the theatre raised up to leave before the credits were over. Awesome feeling!

There's a track named "Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour". First name Heikki is original Finnish name, so it would be interesting to know who this Heikki was or is.

The Turtles - Wooden Head (1972 Blue Whale)

This is a compilation of previously unreleased songs. The best tracks are with some psychedelic sound and mood elements seasoned "She'll Come Back" and "On A Summers Day". Nice, sunny and self-confident  album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VXjQRVJftY
